While I was a private college admissions consultant, I chatted with several admissions officers and directors to get insights on what actually worked when it came to college applications. And without a doubt, the single thing that was repeatedly emphasized by all of them was demonstrating fit.
What is fit? Well, different universities admit different types of people. And most universities are quite transparent about who they want to admit. For example,
Caltech: https://www.admissions.caltech.edu/apply/what-we-look-for
Yale: https://admissions.yale.edu/what-yale-looks-for
Dartmouth: https://admissions.dartmouth.edu/glossary-question/what-does-dartmouth-look-applicant
Stanford: https://admission.stanford.edu/apply/overview/index.html
MIT: https://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/what-we-look-for/
And so here's the final takeaway: once you have finished your essays, ask yourself, "Have I demonstrated that I am the perfect fit for this university specifically". If the answer is No, it's time to go back and rewrite those supplemental essays.
